Beats:
When two sound waves are close in frequency (within about 15 Hz

 of each other) the superposition of the two produces a pulsation

 that we call beats.

Beats can be produced by any kind of wave they are a general 

result of the principle of superposition when applied to two waves

 of nearly the same frequency.
